Purple Jaltomato - Jaltomata Repandidentata - Rare, Delicious, and Perennial

Quantity: 15+ Seeds

Jaltomata Repandidentata is a fruit bearing plant in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Jaltomatas originates in South America, and are relatively unknown outside of their native region. The berries taste absolutely delicious. They can be eaten and enjoyed raw, in salads, cooked in dishes, or made into a salsa. The flavour is unique, but could be described as a combination of a tangy green hot sauce (minus the spice) and tomatillos. they have a nice sweetness too. The plants can grow tall and bushy, so some sort of support or a cage is recommended. The plants are very prolific, and will provide you with many fruits from mid summer until frost. The plants are perennial down to zone 8, but can be grown as an annual everywhere else.

All seeds are organic and open pollinated.

  • Growing Instructions

For the highest yields, It’s best to start Jaltomata seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost; I start them here on the farm in mid march. It's good to sow them in a sterile growing medium; most available seed starting soils should do the job nicely; I use sunshine mix (peat moss and perlite). The soil should be made moist, but not damp. Sow the seeds on the surface for best results, or at most 1/8 inch below the soil surface. Store in a warm area until tiny sprouts emerge from the soil. A heat mat greatly aids in this step, but is not necessary. Seeds take between 3-6 weeks to germinate, but may take less time too. Once germinated, and the first true leaf has formed, it's time to pot up to a larger container that contains a good quality potting soil. Transplant to their final location when the nighttime temperatures are consistently 10°C or higher; here at the farm, this is around mid May.
