Little Gem Romaine / Cos Lettuce - Lactuca Sativa - Early, Tender, and Delicious

Quantity: 250 Seeds

Lettle Gem Romaine Lettuce, is a very interesting and unique romaine variety. It grows to be much smaller than other roamaines, and makes for an excellent choise for personal use. The whole plant can be eaten as a single portion, so leftovers need not age and lose freshness in the fridge. Individual leaves could be harvested over a longer period of time; however, if the plant is left alone, the center will blanche very nicely by the time the plant is just 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide. It's crisp and tender leaves offer excellent flavour, and their small size allows for many plants to grow in a smaller space.

All seeds are organic and open pollinated.

  • Growing Instructions

Lettuce seeds may be started in pots in the spring, or directly sown into the ground. If sown indoors, it's good to plant them in a sterile growing medium; most available seed starting soils should do the job nicely; we use sunshine mix (peat moss and perlite). The soil should be made moist, but not damp. Sow the seeds 1/8 inch below the soil surface. Store in a warm area until tiny sprouts emerge from the soil. Once germinated, and the first true leaf has formed, it's time to pot up to a larger container that contains a good quality potting soil. Transplant to their final location when the nighttime temperatures are consistently 6°C or higher. The plants don’t require very much attention once established other than mulching, and a bi-weekly watering. Plants grow best in full sun, but they do very well in partial shade too.
