Honesty / Silver Dollar Seeds - Lunaria Annua - Perennial & Edible

Quantity: 50 seeds

Honesty or Silver Dollar Plant, aka Lunaria Annua, is an annual member of the Mustard family, Brasicaceae. It originates in Europe, but is grown around the world for ornamental and edible purposes. The stems are often used in flower arrangements once the plant dries out and the seeds have fully developed; they look really neat, and make a pleasant rattling sound when jostled. As well as its unique ornamental qualities, Lunaria roots and seeds are edible and delicious. Lunaria is closely related to mustard, and the seeds taste quite similar, so are used as a mustard reeplacement. The roots are mild and pleasant in flavour too, and are best eaten before the plant bolts. They can be eaten raw, but taste much better when cooked. The leaves and flowers are edible too, however they taste a bit bitter and arent as pleasant as the other parts. Like most brassicas, Lunaria put out a lot of pretty tiny flowers that pollinators and beneficial insects love.

All seeds are organic and open pollinated.

  • Growing Instructions

Lunaria seeds may be started in pots in the spring, or directly sown into the ground. Most available seed starting soils should do the job nicely; we use sunshine mix (peat moss and perlite). The soil should be made moist, but not damp. Sow the seeds 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Store in a warm area until tiny sprouts emerge from the soil. Once germinated, and the first true leaf has formed, it's time to pot up to a larger container that contains a good quality potting soil. Transplant to their final location when the nighttime temperatures are consistently 6°C or higher. The plants don’t require very much attention once established other than a good mulching, and a bi-weekly watering.
