Columbine Mix Seeds - Aquilegia Vulgaris - Perennial & Gorg

Quantity: 15 Seeds

Columbine, aka Aquilegia Vulgaris, is a member of the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. It originates in Europe, and is hardy to zone 3. The plants can grow up to 3 feet tall, and are in flower from April to July. The flowers are beautiful and rather distinctive; they attract a wide range of pollinators too. It's quite easy to grow, and the plants require very little maintenance other than mulch and regular watering. It's not usually easy to decide which variety to grow, so this mix makes the decision easy as it includes several different colours and flower styles. These plants are deer resistant, so they don't need to be planted within a fenced area.

All seeds are organic and open pollinated.

  • Growing Instructions

Columbine seeds may be started in pots in the winter or spring, or directly sown onto the ground. The plants are said to do best when cold stratified for 1-2 weeks; however, We've had great success with no stratification as well. If sown indoors, plant the seeds in a sterile growing medium; most available seed starting soils should do the job nicely; we use sunshine mix (peat moss and perlite). The soil should be made moist, but not damp. Light aids in germination, so it's best to sow the seeds on the surface, or as far down as 1/8 inch. Store in a warm area until tiny sprouts emerge from the soil. Once germinated, and the first true leaf has formed, it's time to pot up to a larger container that contains a good quality potting soil. Transplant to their final location when the nighttime temperatures are consistently 8°C or higher. The plants don’t require very much attention once established other than maybe a layer of mulch, and a bi-weekly watering.
