Black Tartarian Cherry Seeds - Prunus Avium - Delicious, Abundant, and Beautiful

Quantity: 10 Seeds

Black Tartarian Cherry is a tree in the Rose family, Rosaceae. It is native to Russia, but has been naturalized around the world. The trees produce an abundance of super sweet (and slightly tart) cherries. The plants are self fertile, so don't require another tree for pollination; however, the trees will produce heavier yields if another cherry tree is nearby. The fruits are so dark that they almost look black, and their juice is a deep purlple-red. Black Tartarian outshines other varieties when it comes to making juice or jam as they are exceptionally soft and juicy. The trees will naturally grow quite tall, but they respond very well to pruning, so can be cut to the desired shape and size. This variety typically starts to produce in it's 3rd or 4th year. The fruits are smaller than the commercially grown Bing variety, but this variety makes up for it in flavour and quantity. The tree blooms in early spring, and attracts an array of beneficial pollinators which will be helpful to other plants in the garden.

All seeds are organic and open pollinated.

  • Growing Instructions

For best results, It’s best to start Black Tartarian Cherry seeds outdoors either directly or in pots about 1-2 weeks before the first frost; we start them here on the farm in mid October. The soil should be made moist, but not damp. Sow the seeds 1/8 inch below the soil surface. Sprouts will emerge from the soil come next spring. Once germinated, and the first true leaf has formed, it's time to pot up to a larger container that contains a good quality potting soil if planted in a pot. If sown indoors, it is important to cold stratify the seeds for 12 weeks before sowing for best germination results. Transplant to their final location when the nighttime temperatures are consistently 10°C or higher; for us at the farm, this is around May.
